Navigating the Need for Firearm Education in a Changing World

By: Michael Washam

The world has changed, and unfortunately, not always for the better. Today’s landscape is marked by increased violent crime, aggressive rhetoric, and widespread intolerance toward many groups, including minorities, migrants, women, and the LGBTQ+ community. In response, individuals who might never have considered owning a firearm are now exploring this option, often unsure of how to begin and who to trust for instruction.

As a retired police detective and certified firearm instructor, I understand these concerns and offer some guidance. The decision to carry a firearm usually stems from a heightened concern for personal safety. Many individuals express a desire to protect themselves and their families—whether from conventional crimes, road rage incidents, or even active shooter situations.

A common obstacle is the lack of knowledge about firearms. Many have never held a firearm and are apprehensive about the learning process. Another significant concern is finding a trustworthy instructor. Some individuals fear encountering prejudice or hostility from instructors who may not understand or respect their backgrounds.

It’s important to clarify that most firearm instructors are dedicated professionals focused on providing a safe, welcoming learning environment. Their primary goal is to teach firearm safety and competency without imposing personal biases.

However, specialized instructors like myself tailor classes to address the unique concerns of marginalized communities. While the core curriculum remains consistent, we incorporate discussions and scenarios relevant to the specific challenges these groups may face. For example, we emphasize situational awareness, encouraging evasion or de-escalation over the use of force whenever possible.

By customizing the educational experience, we aim to create a less intimidating and more supportive atmosphere. Our mission is to make every student feel comfortable, safe, and confident as they develop essential skills for responsible firearm ownership.

Learning to use a firearm is a deeply personal journey that should be approached with care and respect. By offering specialized instruction, we can empower individuals to make informed decisions about their safety and well-being, fostering a sense of security and self-reliance within their communities.
